DORIS Horlacher

DORIS  S.  SHUGARS  Horlacher, 91, of Tunkhannock died April 1, 2018 at the Mercy Center Nursing Unit in Dallas, Pa.  She was born on  March 26, 1927 in Camden, New Jersey.

 

Her father was Charles Shugars and her mother was Carrie Shugars.

 

Doris was the 3rd of 4 children, and she was pre-deceased by all three siblings.

 

Doris was singing for most of her life.  She sang on the radio at the age of 2,  After High School she worked for RCA -Victor, while there she met Navy First Lieutenant Paul Horlacher in 1945.  They were married on September 1, 1945.

 

After the war, they returned to Paul’s hometown, Tunkhannock, PA.  They built their home and began their family when in March of 1953 they adopted their daughter, Lori.

 

In 1957 the family moved to southern California for what was supposed to be a temporary assignment with Bendix.  After 26 years in California, Paul and Doris returned to Tunkhannock to live out their retirement years.

 

Doris opened up Bygones Antique store on Tioga street in the late 1970s.  She enjoyed over 25 years of finding, buying, and selling antiques for all kinds.  After Paul’s death in 2006, Doris closed her business.

 

Doris suffered poor health since the early 2000s.  Since 2011, she was in skilled nursing care.  She lived out her life at Mercy Center Nursing Units in Dallas, PA.

 

Doris is survived by her daughter, Lori Horlacher of Palm Desert, CA.

 

She is also survived by her niece, Stacy Fols and grand-nephew, Adam Fols; and her nephews: Craig Fols; Charles and Ken Shugars; and Jim and Jeff McDowell.  Two of her nieces; Sarah Pownall and Donna McDowell have preceded her in death.

A memorial service will be held Saturday April 7th at 11am from the Harding-Litwin Funeral Home 123 W. Tioga St. Tunkhannock with Pastor Jon Buxton of the Tunkhannock United Methodist Church officiating.  Friends may pay their respects from 10am until the time of the service.  Interment will follow at the Sunnyside Cemetery.  For online condolences or directions visit www.aplitwinfuneralhomes.com.
