Janice Maureen Fenwick Shaffer, 90 of Tunkhannock, passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family on May 4th 2024. Born December 1, 1933 Carbondale, PA, the daughter of the late Harry D. and Dorothy Huddy Fenwick, Janice is predeceased by her husband of 72 years, Edward John Shaffer Sr. who passed in Nov 2023.

Janice married her high school sweetheart Edward, in November 1951 after graduating from Waymart High School.  After relocating their growing family to Tunkhannock, they worked side by side to open Shaffer’s Pink Apple Restaurant in 1958, where Janice instilled the value of hard work and dedication not only to her own children but to many young workers as they started their first jobs.

In 1981 and for the following twenty years Janice and Ed joined two local physicians, as co-owners/co-managers of Shadow Brook Resort. The couple then retired to Fort Mill, SC, where Janice found her gift of Faith.  Giving of her time volunteering at a Soup Kitchen, Food Pantry and Prison Ministry, along with several mission trips to Honduras, at which time Janice helped to build a Christian School and equipped the new kitchen with the tools and recipes needed to teach hundreds of mother’s new ways to care for and feed their families.

Returning home and their growing extended family, Janice again followed her Faith and continued to serve her Lord by opening the Seven Loaves Soup Kitchen in Tunkhannock, providing free hot, nutritious meals to those in need. Janice was an active member of the Tunkhannock General Women’s Club, and in 2017 was named Tunkhannock Business and Professional Women’s Club ‘Women of the Year.’

Janice leaves behind a legacy for those whose hands she held as they walked the path to sobriety with her.  Guided by her growing Faith and loving nature, many remember her as the woman who helped to change the direction of their lives.

Janice’s family would like to thank the staff at Allied Services Hospice Center, Scranton.  And a very special thank you to Dr. Glen Digwood and Dr. William Speicher for their compassion and care through her final days.  In addition, we would like to thank Cassandra Bell who gave of herself to provide care and loving support to her parents, allowing them to remain in their home.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers Robert Fenwick and Marvin Fenwick, son Edward John Shaffer Jr., and granddaughter Lynda Nonnemacher.
