Ruth Elizabeth Zier, 77, died peacefully at her sister’s home in Tunkhannock on April 6, 2014 with her family by her side. She was born Apr. 2, 1937 to Michael and Helen Gordon in Sterling, Michigan. Her father was from Austria and her mother from Poland. She was married to Max Zier and they resided in Luzerne together for 30 years. Ruth grew up on a small farm in Michigan and she graduated from Sterling High School in 1954. She had many talents and interests. She enjoyed studying her bible and she was musically inclined playing the tuba, piano, and guitar. She had a creative and artistic personality and loved learning new things. She enjoyed painting, sewing, antiquing, designing clothing, and spending time with her family. She had a generous and caring nature and was loved by all. She was a member of the Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses West in Wilkes-Barre. She was a legal and private secretary, seamstress, and an architectural engineer’s assistant. In addition to her parents Ruth is preceded in death by her grandson Stephen M. Greaney II, brothers Arthur and Anthony Gordon, and sister Marie Deromedi. She is survived by her sisters Rose Jeanette Morroni, Michigan, Esther Nagle, Tunkhannock, her former husband Edward Updyke Jr, children Kymberley Updyke-Baran, Tunkhannock, Edward Updyke III, Chase and Desiree Parduski, Chesapeake Va. Four Stepchildren Max Zier, Jr, Luzerne, Irene Ogrodnick, Wilkes-Barre, Chrissy Tomcho, Kingston, and Louis Zier, Edwardsville. 9 granchildren, 5 step grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 1 step great grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.
