Shirley Daniels

Shirley L. Daniels, 74, of Waymart, died Tuesday morning at The Regional Hospital of Scranton. Born in Lemon Township, Lemon, Pa., December 27, 1939, daughter of the late Herbert and Leathea (Bennett) Dickinson. She was the granddaughter of the late Pern and Ollie Bennett and is survived by her husband, Arthur H. Daniels. She and her husband celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary on September 22. She was a 1957 graduate of Tunkhannock High School. She was a former employee of Dr. and Mrs. John Cashin, Tunkhannock. She later moved to the Binghamton/Vestal and Ithica, New York area; Philadelphia and resided in the Poconos for two years prior to moving back to the local area, where she was employed as a waitress for six years in various local restaurants. She was employed at Clarks Summit State Hospital for 21 years before her retirement in March, 2000. She was a former member of the Moose Lodge, Ithaca, NY; President of the Warner Reunion; Treasurer of the Severcool Reunion; President of the Severcool Reunion; former member of the Country Music Association; former member of the Lemon Methodist Church, Lemon and the Vestal Center Baptist Church, Vestal Center, NY and attended the Waymart United Methodist Church, Waymart. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. She loved giving and making other people happy. Wherever she went it seems that she always gained an extra friend. She had a “heart of gold,” and will be missed by so many. To some she was known as Shirl, Dixie, and Smiley. She was an avid country music and bluegrass fan and devoted much of her time to music and writing poetry and songs. George Jones was her all time favorite and she often referred to him as “my Georgie.” She also collected porcelain dolls, teddy bears and other various collections. All of her family and friends were her treasures. She was a lover of nature and God’s works and she loved her most faithful companions—Onyx, Shadow, and Theo. Her family would like to thank the entire staff at The Regional Hospital, Spirit of Mercy (especially Andre), and Allied Home Health for their love and care these past several months. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Deborah A. Askew, and husband Harold, Factoryville; Sarah L. Durso, and husband Donald, Factoryville; and Sandi J. Mills, and husband Chris, Throop; five sons, Timothy L. Yarbrough, Georgia; William (Pat) Yarbrough, Carbondale; Gordon W. Yarbrough, Lake Ariel; Shane E. Yarbrough, and wife Lisa, Scott Township; three brothers, Donald Dickinson, and wife Mary, New York; Raymond Dickinson, and wife Kandi, Ava., Missouri; and Wayne Dickinson, and wife Tami, Lemon; 17 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one stepdaughter, Stephanie (Yarbrough) Schuterman, Holland She was preceded in death by two sons, Terry L. Yarbrough and Shawn D. Yarbrough; one daughter, Darlene M. Barhite; one stepson, Byron Yarbrough, Jr.; one brother, Harold Dickinson. Funeral services will be held at 11am Saturday from the Harding-Litwin Funeral Home 123 W. Tioga St. with Pastor Paul Fields officiating. Friends may call Friday at the funeral home from 7-9pm and Saturday from 10am until the service time.
